It has been 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story film was released, launching Pixar as a leading film company and bringing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, providing a glimpse into the plot but keeping viewers wondering how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang

The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a latest plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it likely will.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping giveaway items locate loving owners.

Surely, Pixar will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with Woody. And where is the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Connections from the Last Installment

Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. The clip displays the badge attached to her shirt.

It is hoped she is remains the driving force among the group.

Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
