In a move that pairs generosity with a clear warning, the United States has committed $2 billion for UN emergency relief operations. But, this contribution was accompanied by a stark admonition for the global organization: it must "change or face irrelevance."
A Significant Announcement During Broader Budget Reductions
The funding announcement was made amid substantial cuts in American funding for humanitarian operations. Further cuts are expected from other major contributors including Britain and Germany. The US representative, a senior Trump administration figure, delivered the statement alongside the UN's emergency relief chief.
