Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
